Paying it forward - worth a try to do this.

The other day I was at the supermarket getting fruits and vegetables when I overheard an elderly lady saying that she was short 60 cent on her purchase and that she would need to put back an item. Just at that moment, a young man in the store dropped a $1 coin on the countertop and said he didn't want her to go without her greens. The woman thanked the young man profusely and asked what she could do in return. He told her to look for an opportunity to help three other people when she sees a need.

I knew what this Good Samaritan was talking about -- a practice called Pay It Forward, which comes from a book by Catherine Ryan Hyde and was later made into a movie by the same name. The story involves a young boy who proposes doing good deeds for at least three people and then asks his recipients to do good deeds for three more people.

The nicest thing about the idea of paying it forward, is that we can practice it on our own. We don't have to be wealthy philanthropists to help others. Sometimes the things that can make a difference in others' lives are as simple as a smile or the offer to extend a helping hand. And these little ordinary acts of kindness paid forward in ever growing numbers can have a real impact on the world.

If you are ready to try paying it forward, you can begin by becoming aware of your surroundings and opening yourself up to situations that you could have a positive effect on. The person who becomes the recipient of your good deed could be someone you know or even a stranger. When someone asks you how they can repay your act of kindness, encourage them to extend kindness to three other people and then tell those people to do a good deed for three more people, and so on. And whenever you feel that someone has done something nice for you, remember to pay it forward as well.

Paying it forward can be a very uplifting experience. Just remember that when you pay it forward, be sure to take care of yourself, as well. Giving of oneself is an important and wonderful thing, but we should remember that the better off we are, the more we are able to do for others. May it help you to improve your own situation so that you can pay it forward.

May all blessings be yours!!!
